Optimization lectures: The Golden Section
The Golden Section is the way of diving a line of that the ratio of the larger part to the total is the same as the ratio of the smaller to large. It is meant to be pleasing to the eye.

This was use extensively in Ancient Greece e.g., for buildings and has appeared in literature and fine art:
